My dad always kept Calvin and Hobbes books in our white family/rapist van for the quad-annual drives from San Francisco to Los Angeles. When we grew bored with our gameboys and snacks and yelling at each other,  my sister and I played a game called “Last Panel” (well, I call it “Last Panel,” she called it “Shelby I don’t want to play your stupid game just do it yourself are you sitting on my gummy bears?”). Last Panel is a game in which Allie - my sister - would read the first three panels of a C&H strip, and I would try to fill in the last line. Was I good? Fuck you of course I was good, or else I wouldn’t bring it up. I NEVER talk about things I’m bad at (ie. singing, catching a ball, everything else). When I’m sitting in my dorm room and I’m tired and sad and out of cookies I pull up strips on the computer box to cheer myself up. Just two buddies having a great time in their own world. And even though Watterson no longer produces the strip, that same awesome and righteous friendship lives on in Finn and Jake - the heroes of my favorite cartoon. Both Calvin and Hobbes and Adventure Time somehow appeal to both the dumb child in me and the dumb adult on the outside of me. So thanks Pendleton and Bill for your works of art.
And thanks to ME for this work of art*!
